Springs do the heavy lifting, not the opener. Every spring is rated for a set number of open and close cycles, and when it wears out it snaps. We replace it with a spring sized to your door’s weight and height, then adjust the tension so the door lifts evenly and stays put halfway up.
Garage door springs are under serious tension, and winding or releasing them without the right tools is how people get hurt. Leave the door closed and call us. A broken spring can also bend a cable or knock the door crooked, so we check for an off-track door and look over the rest of the door for repairs while we are there.
What people ask when a spring breaks.
Look at the bar above the door. A torsion spring with a gap in the coils is broken. Other signs: the door feels extremely heavy, lifts a few inches and stops, or goes up crooked.
On a two-spring door we usually recommend it. They were installed together and have done the same number of cycles, so the second one tends to fail soon after.
Do not force the door with the opener. Call us and we will come out and get it working safely.
